Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna'

balkan clary

Above the compact mound of aromatic, grey-green foliage, purple-black stems arise from early summer bearing rich, violet-blue flowers. A vibrant and long-flowering addition to the border, they look spectacular when planted with rich plums and pinks as well as smokey purples.

Aralia cordata 'Sun King'

aralia

A great foliage plant that quickly forms a handsome mound of large, golden-green (or lime-coloured in shadier spots) leaves, which are held on rich mahogany stems. The tropical-looking foliage is reason enough to choose this plant, as it will add structure and form as well as colour to the planting scheme. In late summer however, tall flowerspikes appear, smothered in rounded clusters of tiny white flowers, and later rounded black (inedible) fruit - a bonus!

Deschampsia cespitosa

tufted hair grass

Also known as Golden Dew, this evergreen grass creates the perfect smoldering base as when it catches the light, it shimmers like a golden cloud. It has silvery, reddish-brown flowers from early to late summer

Dianthus carthusianorum

carthusian pink

A tall pink with small, single, magenta flowers above narrow, grassy green foliage. Hailing from the alpine meadows of central and southeast Europe with pretty pink flowers throughout the summer, it thrives in dry, sunny sites and alkaline soils. Try it among ornamental grasses, or to bring cheery summer colour to a meadow. Deadheading regularly will help encourage more flowers.
