Viburnum opulus 'Roseum'

snowball tree (syn. Sterile)

In May and June the branches of this vigorous deciduous shrub are smothered with large, snowball-like clusters of white or green-tinted white flowers - which sometimes age to pink. With maple-like, fresh green leaves that become purple-tinted in autumn it's an excellent ornamental plant for a sunny shrub or mixed border with fertile, moist, well-drained soil.

Athyrium filix-femina

lady fern

This is the lady fern, with graceful, bright green, filigree-like leaves. One of our recommended plants, it looks great planted in bold swathes with other shade-loving plants in a sheltered, shady woodland edge, shrub or mixed border. It is deciduous, and begins to look tatty in the autumn, so try it among evergreen ferns or late-flowering perennials.

Cornus canadensis

creeping dogwood

Showy white petal-like flower bracts look really pretty when they appear in late spring and early summer, framed by a collar of rich green leaves. After they fade, they are followed in autumn by a jaunty cluster of bright red berries. This creeping dogwood is an attractive groundcover for the front of a shrub border or woodland garden. It performs best in a partially shaded spot in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained, neutral to acid soil.

Phlox divaricata 'Clouds of Perfume'

phlox

Masses of small, ice-blue, fragrant flowers appear in June and July above the hairy, bright green leaves of this spreading, semi-evergreen phlox. Ideal for woodland gardens and cottage style schemes where they have protection from sun during the hottest part of the day. To make the most of their heady scent, plant near an entranceway or frequently used path. Add lots of leaf-mould or composted pine needles to the soil when planting, since it prefers a humus-rich soil.
